General Post-Operative Instructions

Your recovery is an important part of your surgical journey. Following these general guidelines will help ensure optimal healing. Please note that Dr. Cheng will provide you with specific instructions tailored to your procedure.

  • Take prescribed medications as directed
  • Keep all follow-up appointments
  • Rest and allow your body adequate time to heal
  • Keep surgical sites clean and dry unless otherwise instructed
  • Avoid strenuous activity until cleared by Dr. Cheng
  • Do not smoke — smoking impairs wound healing
  • Stay hydrated and maintain a healthy diet
  • Contact our office immediately if you experience unusual symptoms

When to Contact Us

While some discomfort is normal after surgery, please contact our office right away if you experience any of the following:

  • Fever above 38.5°C (101.3°F)
  • Sudden or severe increase in pain not relieved by medication
  • Excessive bleeding or drainage from the surgical site
  • Signs of infection (increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or pus)
  • Difficulty breathing or chest pain
  • Severe nausea or vomiting that prevents keeping fluids down

We welcome patients from across British Columbia and beyond. If you are travelling to Victoria for your procedure, here is some helpful information to make your visit as smooth as possible.

Before You Travel

  • Schedule your consultation and surgery dates in advance
  • Arrange accommodation near the office
  • Plan to have someone accompany you on surgery day
  • Confirm your travel dates with our office

During Your Stay

  • Plan to stay in Victoria for all required follow-up appointments
  • Keep our office number accessible at all times
  • Follow all post-operative care instructions closely
  • Do not fly or travel long distances until cleared

Victoria is a beautiful city with many accommodation options. Please contact our office and we would be happy to help coordinate your visit.

Preparing for Your Procedure

To help ensure the best possible outcome, please follow these general guidelines before your surgery. Dr. Cheng will provide you with additional procedure-specific instructions at your pre-operative appointment.

  • Stop smoking at least 4 weeks before and after surgery
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements as advised
  • Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery
  • Arrange for help at home for the first 24–48 hours
  • Prepare a comfortable recovery area at home
  • Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery (if under general anaesthesia)
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing on the day of surgery
  • Bring all completed paperwork to your appointment
